TORONTO, December 20, 2022 – Diversity and accessibility continue to be a major focus for Serendipity Media Ltd (SML) and S-Media Inc., with production starting on a new hockey series called BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS.
After the success of CAMP OF DREAMS featuring Ethan Bear, which premiered on TSN on Canada’s National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS will employ the same production team and further delve into stories showcasing individuals and organizations who are committed to changing hockey culture.
“The sport of hockey is under intense scrutiny. It has become clear that ‘Hockey Culture’ is in need of a sweeping overhaul,” says BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS Director Karen Zylak, who also directed CAMP OF DREAMS. “Calls for meaningful change in all realms of the sport have been heard around the country – from sponsors, hockey parents, and most importantly from the players themselves.”
Hosted and coproduced by Canadian hockey changemaker Saroya Tinker of The Premier Hockey Federation’s Toronto Six, each episode of BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS will spotlight and celebrate those who are committed to fostering positive social change within the sport – from professional to minor hockey levels.
The need for these stories to be told was highlighted after the success of CAMP OF DREAMS, which has been requested in numerous schools for educational uses since its initial airing on TSN. Most recently, CAMP OF DREAMS and Ethan Bear were featured on CBC and Sportsnet’s Hockey Night in Canada “After Hours.”
“Ethan’s story in CAMP OF DREAMS and what he has been through is a story that needs to be told,” said After Hours host Scott Oake. “Stories about people moving the sport forward and bettering their community will only help the hockey culture.”
BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS is the latest production from Serendipity Media and S-Media with Executive Producers Mark Kristofic, Brendan McNeill, Ari Taub, Michael Baker and Patrick White, Director Karen Zylak, Coproducer and Host Saroya Tinker, and Director of Photography Alex Browne.
BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS is proudly supported by Enlightened Private Capital.
